Rep Sherry Roberts Has Submitted a Bill to Extend Term Limits For Members of General Assembly
STATE HOUSE -- Representative Sherry Roberts (R-District 29 Coventry, West Greenwich) has submitted House bill (7607) which proposes an amendment to the Constitution to increase term limits for Senators and Representatives from two to four years and imposes a limit of two consecutive terms for those offices.
“I believe a two-year tenure for incumbents is too short,” said Roberts. “During their first year in office, Representatives and Senators are so busy learning how to navigate the legislature, they cannot properly concentrate on the business of creating and passing laws. They spend the next year preparing for an upcoming election, and it’s just not enough time to focus on legislation.”
Roberts added, “However, I do believe term limits should be placed on how many consecutive terms can be served, capping it at two four-year terms, for a total of eight years. I see great benefits to capping the tenure as it would serve to dismantle any potential strongholds where there could be political corruption in place.”
House bill 7607 would add an additional benefit to the public, by saving a significant amount of money in campaign financing.
