Rhode Island General Assembly Set To Hold Hearings On Ethics Legislation

Fast on the heels of Thursday night's extended testimony on Line Item Vetoes, the Rhode Island General Assembly will hold hearings, tentatively scheduled for the "Rise Of The House" (Approx 4:30) Room 101, Tuesday evening, under the auspices of the House Judiciary Committee.  The proposed legislation, detailed below, restores the full jurisdiction of the Ethics Commission over members of the general assembly including acts otherwise protected by the Speech and Debate Clause. Since Irons v. Rhode Island Ethics Commission, decided in 2009, the Rhode Island General Assembly has essentially acted free of ethics oversight. The results have been less than spectacular.
