Raimondo like Chafee

MORE TAXES, NEW TOLLS, AND TOTAL CONFUSION
Picture
Editors note: This post was submitted by Brandon Bell, Chair of the RI GOP. He can be reached at 401-274-8800 or by email at bbell@rigop.org.

When former Governor Lincoln Chafee decided not to seek re-election, Rhode Islanders looked forward to new leadership. Five months into the Governorship of Gina Raimondo, Rhode Islanders are scratching their heads wondering if anything has really changed. Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Brandon S. Bell points out the following:

Governor Lincoln Chafee’s solutions to Rhode Island's problems included expanding the sales tax and putting in a new toll on the Sakonnet Bridge. Governor Gina Raimondo’s solutions include a new statewide property tax and a new tax on health care insurance bought by all individuals and small businesses to pay for Rhode Island’s Obamacare exchange, which costs more to operate than the DMV. Now, Governor Raimondo wants new tolls on about two dozen bridges. So much for Raimondo’s campaign pledge that: “we’re not going to … tax our way out” of our problems.

Chairman Bell further states: What is even worse is Governor Raimondo has sprung this new vague toll proposal at the very end of the legislative session. No one is sure how much the toll is, which bridges will have a toll, and who actually will be tolled. It is not even clear Raimondo knows or understands the details of her plan. In a recent WPRI 12 interview, she indicated that her tolls would only impact the “biggest trucks”. Yesterday, immediately before a House hearing, she changed her proposal to exempt some classes of trucks from these tolls. This total confusion is something we expected from Lincoln Chafee, now we need to expect this from Governor Raimondo.

Unfortunately, it looks like four more years of total confusion for Rhode Islanders.

U.S. House protects states' medical marijuana laws, slashes DEA budget

Amendments to Spending Bill Prioritize Fighting Violent Crime, End DEA Bulk Collection Program

Picture
WASHINGTON, DC – A bipartisan amendment to the Fiscal Year 2016 Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriationsspending bill that prohibits DEA and Department of Justice funds from being used to interfere in states that have legalized medical marijuana passed the House today by a margin of 242-186. The amendment is a renewal of the one that passed in May of last year and was reintroduced by Representatives Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Sam Farr (D-CA). A similar amendment was also passed protecting states that have allowed industrial hemp. Yesterday, the House passed an amendment to ban the DEA’s bulk data collection program and slashed the DEA budget by $23 million. Instead, that money will now go to combat child abuse, improve the testing of rape kits, expand the use of body cameras on police officers, and reduce the deficit.

“Even Congress is now acknowledging the failures of the drug war and of the DEA and its invasive methods,” said Major Neill Franklin (Ret.), executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. “Conservatives believe states have the right to decide their own rules, libertarians understand prohibition infringes upon civil liberties, and liberals know the effect prohibition has had on racial minorities, families, and communities.”

A separate amendment introduced by Representatives Tom McClintock (R-CA) and Jared Polis (D-CO) that would have prevented the DEA from undermining state rights in places that have legalized marijuana narrowly failed by a vote of 206-222.

“Continued protection for medical marijuana patients is something most politicians now agree upon, and we can expect that states’ recreational marijuana laws will soon have the same level of protection against federal interference,” said Lieutenant Commander Diane Goldstein (Ret.)

In August 2013, the Justice Department released a memorandum stating that the DOJ would no longer go after states that chose to legalize and regulate marijuana, as long as those states prohibited access to children, limited the involvement of organized criminal activity in the industry, and abided by other reasonable standards.

Currently, 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana and four states along with D.C. have legalized marijuana outright. According to the centrist think tank Third Way, 67% of Americans believe Congress should pass a bill to protect states from federal interference if they choose to legalize marijuana, so long as a strong regulatory system is in place.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition is a group of law enforcement officers opposed to the War on Drugs.

Let the Patriot Act die!

Today Libertarian National Committee Chair Nicholas Sarwark released the following statement:

I woke up this morning to the news that the government no longer has the legal authority to spy on the phone records of every American. Those most egregious provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act expired last night, thanks in large part to the efforts of Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky.  This is a powerful first step in the fight to restore liberty for all Americans.

The tragedy is that this blot on everything America stands for was ever passed into law in the first place over a decade ago.  The tragedy is that many other provisions of that horrible law remain in place.  The tragedy is that in two days time the Senate is aiming to pass some sort of "kinder and gentler" version of the PATRIOT Act that will keep spying on Americans, but promise toothless "oversight" of that spying.

Make no mistake.  The Libertarian Party wants nothing less than to repeal the USA PATRIOT Act in its entirety, a sentiment widely shared by most Americans who have taken a hard look at the law.  We are the only national political party to endorse the Surveillance State Repeal Act sponsored by Representatives Pocan and Massie in the House, which would repeal major provisions of the Patriot Act.  We stood up for the rights of Americans to oppose the original passage in 2001 and have stood up against every renewal of that terrible law.

It's taken almost 14 years of political activism by political outsiders, the revelations of Edward Snowden, and the courage of a very few politicians to get us to this first step, forcing the sunset of the Section 215 provisions.  Thank you Senator Paul for your patriotic actions to oppose that misnamed law, forcing portions of it to expire.  Now it's time to finish the job of a full repeal of the USA PATRIOT Act.

The Libertarian Party urges all Americans: Call your U.S. Senators today and let them know you do not want the Patriot Act revived and to let it die.

A bill could be up for vote as soon as Tuesday, June 2 in the senate.

Find your senators’ contact information here to call them now.
