The 6/10 Connector is a heavily utilized transportation system embedded in Providence’s urban fabric. Created to provide routes through the city, the Connector enables drivers to link to routes leading away from the urban core.
The City of Providence and State of Rhode Island have an opportunity to re-imagine the 6/10 Connecter. The corridor’s bridge infrastructure is slated for repairs and money is currently set aside for the project. With many cities looking at their infrastructure needs and ways to address pressing environmental concerns, environmentally & economically sustainable infrastructure is replacing outdated and outmoded systems of a generation ago where speed & convenience were the primary factors considered in design. As a result, many urban centers across the nation have, or are in the process, of developing opportunities for more efficient transport while thoughtfully considering community, environment, health & economic needs.
Providence is positioned at this moment with the 6/10 project to step up and join those progressive cities with smartsustainable design. This project, if done with consideration to population, infrastructure, environmental & economic concerns, coupled with thoughtful, innovative design, could make Providence a world model for urban design.
